I Went to Waco and It Was OK

My work takes me to a lot of places that I wouldn’t otherwise think to go, and this month it was a conference in Waco, Texas. I asked around for a couple of weeks – what people thought of when they heard “Waco”. There are only two answers: Branch Davidians and Chip and Joanna.

I had no idea how much my mother knew about Chip and Joanna.

It turns out they also have a ton of coffee shops (though not much is open before 7am) and a fantastic independent bookstore called Fabled (where I only thought to take a pic of the mural). But the booksellers have plenty of recommendations and there is a coffee bar. The seasonal special drink was called The Giant Peach and it was delightful.

We had a group dinner at Magnolia Table, where breakfast was an option, but I went with the chicken salad sandwich because I had to know if the croissant is all that. It is. I went so far as to say the croissant is better than the famous biscuits, which started a bit of an argument, but that’s what I’m here for.

I went back to the Carry Out place at the Silos and ordered it again.

The Silos are charming and all, but farmhouse chic really isn’t my style and I was not waiting in that line for the bakery. However, my Texan pals gave me a pro-tip: if you only want a cupcake or two, there is a food truck inside the campus that has them without the line. Lemon – Lavender, Baby:

And ok, if you need the tourist shots:

As ever, I’m glad I had the chance to visit. And now I’m going to read those new books.
